Adobe first started development of a text editor for web development on Edge Code, which was discontinued as of November 2014.[11] This effort was later transformed into Adobe Brackets. Brackets can be run on both Mac and Windows machines. To begin the download process, visit this website and press the big, blue "Download Brackets 1.7" button. On a Mac, once the download has completed, you should see the following screen. Click and drag the Brackets application icon onto the Applications folder image.
Once Brackets is downloaded, you can open the application. On a Windows machine, once you've downloaded and installed Brackets, it should appear in your applications list. You can access and open Brackets by visiting the "Apps" menu, or by searching your computer using the "Search" tool. On a Mac, you'll be able to open it by visiting your "Launchpad" and clicking on Brackets.
The good news is that you don't need much to write HTML or CSS! All it is is text on a page, so a program as simple as Notepad will do the trick. Personally, I use brackets.io, which is a lightweight, easy-to-use editor geared towards web developers, and is free and open source on Windows, Mac and Linux. There are other tools, of course, but that's the one I'm most familiar with.
- [Teacher] If you have access to the exercise files used throughout this course, you'll want to download them to your desktop and follow along with me step-by-step. The exercise files for this course have one folder for each chapter that we cover. Inside of there, you'll find a folder for each movie. I've included the starting and ending states for every file that you see me edit on screen. To know exactly what file I'm working on, look for an overlay that looks like this and will tell you the exact location and name of the file that I'm working with. In most folders, you'll find files with an _end added to the file or folder name. These files contain the completed code that I write during the movie. You can use these to check your work against.
